Liberia's Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Amara Konneh is currently in Accra, Ghana for serious medical attention after he fell twice in less than a week because of acute head ache.

Konneh initially fell off on Feb. 27 and was immediately rushed to the John F. Kennedy Hospital from where he was later discharged on condition on being monitored at home.

Monday morning he was, Konneh was rushed to JFK accompanied by Information Minister Lewis Brown, Deputy Finance Minister Sabastine Moah and Liberia's Ambassador to the United States Jeremiah Sulunteh, according to Hospital sources.

A Ministry of Finance Media Services release issued late Monday said "Minister Konneh has experienced severe headache in recent times and had undergone treatment at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia."

"In order to do additional testing, Doctors at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital recommended he travel to enable him do more diagnoses," the release concluded.

Konneh has been involved in a heated exchange with supporters of Montserrado County Representative Acarous Gray who spent several days wielding placards before the Ministry of Finance, calling for his resignation.

Recently, casket-totting youths besieged Konneh’s residence on 8th Street in Sinkor, barely 24-hours after similar incident occurred at the Capitol By-pass residence of Rep. Gray. Many Liberians frowned at the purported behind-the-scene actions of the two government officials to deploy youths in the street to degrade one another.

Konneh, during the impasse, accused his "detractors" who are not comfortable with the level of transparency he has brought to the government's financial sector through the Open Budget initiative that the government, through his Ministry, has launched.

The Finance Minister described the situation as "an attack on transparency," vowing, "we will continue the fight until there is a high level of transparency in how people spend Public Money. This whole fight is against the open Budget initiative that we have launched to bring accountability and transparency to government."

Several government officials have begun wishing the Minister well and a speedy recovery.

They are also of the conviction that the abrupt illness of the Minister is a major challenge to the ongoing budget formulation process at which he initially fell off at the SKD stadium.
